“Teaching people to believe in themselves is by far the most important thing I can do”
Jack Welch (former CEO General Electric)
Since its foundation, Etoile European Theater Center has focused its work on theater training within schools of different levels in the Reggio province. Through theater projects dedicated to students of the institutes over the years, Etoile has brought many young people closer to theatrical language, using the rules and techniques imposed by theatricality as a means to educate and raise awareness.
Over the years, the association has created and established educational and artistic collaboration relationships with numerous realities in Europe, coming to define projects with an international scope, capable of engaging young people from all over Europe . The primary objective of these collaborations remains the desire to give students the opportunity to learn, fielding a series of transversal skills, coming into contact with foreign realities. This type of approach encourages and invites students to put themselves to the test, practically applying the notions learned during the workshop and offering them the opportunity to deal directly with involvement in a production on the stage of historic theaters, such as Franco Tagliavini Theater in Novellara.
Etoile European Theater Center since 2012 has created Etoile International, that is a department, through which the association coordinates all projects at an international level.
Furthermore, Etoile International uses collaborations with European countries such as France, Holland, Romania, Switzerland, Poland, Spain and Portugal.
Some of which in recent years have also become Etoile offices abroad.
In France, the goal is to produce and create new international cooperation and co-production projects through the branch of the “Bel’Etoile” association, directed by Marie Novelle Bouvier. Numerous delegations of French students had the opportunity to take part in projects and performances that took place at Franco Tagliavini Theater.
A training center in the field of audiovisual techniques “Etoile Sound and Vision” was born in the Netherlands, through which young people have the opportunity to learn through practice all the notions necessary to become lighting, audio and video technicians. This sub-fund is coordinated by Marten van der Weele.
The pride of international projects is Project Etoile which sees young people from schools in Italy-France-Spain-Holland work together to prepare, in a week, a theatrical performance with the aid of audio visual effects.
Each year the International Project foresees the participation of Institutes of the Reggio area, such as the Galvani-Iodi Institute and the Filippo Re Institute of Reggio Emilia and the Silvio D’Arzo Institute of Montecchio Emilia in a theatrical training course that prepares them for ‘meeting with the foreign delegations arriving on the occasion of the final moment of the project.
Since 2013, Theater Franco Tagliavini has become the host place of the event, which is proposed as a preview of Teatro Lab Festival.
This has undoubtedly proved to be an added value of the project, as the young participants have the opportunity to live and experience concretely the theatrical experience proposed to them.
The Project Etoile every year is articulated around a theme, correlated with the theme of the current season of Etoile, and provides for the dialogue of different forms of art such as theater, dance, singing, multimedia disciplines to create a show that sees every year on stage more than 60 young people, including interpreters and technicians.
In addition to the artistic purpose, the project provides moments of sharing and cultural exchange between the participants, implementing transversal skills capable of implementing the personal and educational experience of the students.
Project Etoile also emphasizes the recognition of the value of the place where the event belongs, enhancing moments of cultural exchange with the host territory.
Etoile International provides moments of exchange and mobility abroad, which each year sees an average of 60 students engaged in workshops and shows abroad. Italian students are hosted by participating foreign children or by structures where they are the protagonists of moments of living and sharing.
Etoile has always worked in order to train aware young people, not only on the stage, but in all the phases and moments that an international project can foresee and offer them.
Since 2014 Etoile European Theater Center has been welcoming internships from the Creative College of Utrecht (NL) for six-month training courses, in which the students involved live within the spaces of the Etoile headquarters, Borgo delle Querce, actively participating in the professional activities of the ‘Association.
It is a professionalizing experience, in which the student is trained both theoretically and practically, directly confronting the different theatrical realities and projects that gravitate around Etoile.
During the educational process, students are called to take part in the work team at events and shows in collaboration with the Franco Tagliavini Theater and the Novellara Municipal Administration.
It is also a moment of personal growth for the students, as they have to deal with the Italian culture and language.
Over the years, internships have been carried out aimed at students of the “Sound and Vision” technical department of the Creative College, that is specialized in the study of audio, light and video shooting and editing techniques, and students of “Leisure and Events”, oriented towards a training process based on the organization of events linked to the cultural sphere.
Since 2016, every year Etoile hosts students of the Escola Profissional de Comercio Externo in Porto for four weeks, in collaboration with the Consortium, for a European mobility project that sees them engaged in the study of communication techniques, photos and videos during some of the major events managed by Etoile at the Franco Tagliavini Theater in Novellara, such as Teatro Lab and the Theater Season Opening event.

In the aa.ss. 2017/18 and 2018/19 president of AISA-RE (Association of Autonomous Schools of Reggio Emilia)
“In a world where borders no longer exist, it is very important that young people, as part of a study project, included in the PCTO, accompanied by their teachers and Etoile staff, can have the opportunity to travel, to meet new realities and new people. This stay abroad experience will allow the student to get to know the culture of another country, to develop personal attitudes such as open-mindedness, respect for oneself and for others and civic and social awareness.
International projects represent an educational and life opportunity for students. They are very important in an increasingly globalized and multicultural world like the present one because they allow them to improve their language skills and to implement a spirit of adaptation to new lifestyles. Staying abroad allows students to interact with peers living in another country and represents an experience that makes young people grow international awareness, knowledge of other habits of life and other cultures, together with the discovery of the values of their own culture of belonging.
The theater experience, correlated with a stay abroad, also allows students to work with peers by implementing an educational action between peers by putting into practice what they have already learned in school, overcoming linguistic, cultural and personal barriers.
Within these projects, friendships are created and these relationships are able to last over time.
During their stay, students participate in guided tours, meetings with local personalities and moments of socialization and entertainment (sports, music, parties).”
